Inserting Text

Claudio de Castro Jan 16, 2018 10:18PM HKT

I have a lot of written text, that I want to bring into order. I therefore want to add files to Subtopics, so that I have a clear overview, but still can access all my data. Is that somehow possible?

Claudio,

Within Xmind you have the following alternatives:

nodes
----
+ the text is visible at a glance
+ searchable by "Find"
- gets cluttered when you have many long texts on a sheet
- a style covers all the text in a node
- copying & pasting texts

notes
----
+ clutter-free
+ styles per character
- text is visible only by hovering or by opening the notes panel (either pop-up or side one)
- searchable only by "Search"
- copying & pasting texts

embedded documents
----
+ clutter-free
+ documents are bundled into the map making it easier to share
+ as documents are opened and edited with an external editor (MS Word, OpenOffice etc.) they can have whatever formatting the editor supports
+ no need to copy & paste texts
- needs to be reimported after editing
- not searchable at all
- no preview

links
----
+ clutter-free
+ as documents are opened and edited with an external editor (MS Word, OpenOffice etc.) they can have whatever formatting the editor supports
+ no need to copy & paste texts
+ no need to be reimported after editing
- not searchable at all
- no preview

images (take an image of your text)
----
+ the text is visible at a glance
+ as documents are opened and edited with an external editor (MS Word, OpenOffice etc.) they can have whatever formatting the editor supports
- tidious to split the texts into parts and take screenshots of it
- needs to be reimported after editing
- not searchable at all

Here are some things I've done with Xmind:
- max number of words in a node ca. 50
- max length of text in a note: what you can see in the side panel without scrolling
- no embedded documents
- links to external documents that are in the same Dropbox folder (e.g. /Dropbox/MyProject) in case I need to share the map
- images of mathematical formulas or charts that need to be visible in the map

For more heavy weight text organising you need to look for other solutions than Xmind.
