I figured out how to fix this problem on a Mac. Here's what I did:

    1. Close all XMind documents, files, and applications.
    2. Move to application from Finder window to trash.
    3. Empty trash.
    4. Open a .mmap file that has the Xmind icon on the document. (I also use mindjet BTW.)
    5. Right click on the file and locate the 'Get Info' tab.
    6. A window will open. Go to the 'Open with' section.
    7. Change Application: Click the dropdown menu and select the application you want to use as the default for this file type. If the application isn’t listed, choose "Other…" to find and select it.
    8. Change All: Click "Change All…" to apply this change to all files with the same extension. Confirm the change when prompted.
    9. Then you need to clear the Icon Cache.
    10. Clear the Icon Cache: macOS caches icons for performance. Clearing this cache can force the system to rebuild the icon cache with the correct icons. This process can be a bit complex and usually involves commands in Terminal. Here’s a general approach:
      • Open Terminal.
      • Type sudo find /private/var/folders/ -name com.apple.iconservices -exec rm -rf {} \; to delete the icon cache.
      • Reboot your Mac by typing sudo reboot in the Terminal or using the Apple menu to restart.
      • Note: Use Terminal commands with caution. If you're not comfortable with Terminal, consider seeking further assistance.
    11. Restart Finder: You can restart Finder by option-right-clicking the Finder icon in the dock and selecting "Relaunch".

    12. Here's the last part which is VERY important: Restart your computer, BUT unclick the box that says 'Reopen windows when logging back in' - make sure this box is unchecked and you should be good to go. Hope this helps.
